Antique Majolica Frog on Melon Jug – SOLD

For your consideration, an Antique Majolica Jug / Pitcher in the form of a frog perched upon a melon, England, late 19th Century, maker unknown. A must have piece for any figural Majolica collection.

The greenish brown frog has a spotted belly, his mouth forms the spout of the jug. He sits on a brown dimpled textured melon with yellow ribbing. The ear shaped “twig” handle ends in leaves of bright green & burgundy glazing at the base of the melon. The same burgundy glaze is seen on the interior of the frogs mouth. A  humorous, aesthetic piece with a touch of Palissy.

7″ high X 6 1/2″ at the widest point.

Book Reference: “Majolica Figures”, Helen Cunningham, p.135     Cunningham points out that a few potteries used this mold. This example has crisp mold work with a nuanced glazing.
